AAPI BeSpoken was handcrafted by co-creators Leah Shin and John Kim. However, the inspiration behind the concept of AAPI BeSpoken was inspired by Raphael Gaultier who launched UW Black Excellence, which showcased UW African-American students as leaders in their community. Check out Raphael's beautiful project here. With inspiration from UW Black Excellence, Leah reached out to John wanting to create a project addressing AAPI's lack of representation in U.S. mainstream media for AAPI Heritage month. Together, they outlined everything BeSpoken is today, working after class and over the weekends since November 2016. Wanting just 20-30 UW students to join their project, they ended up reaching out to friends attending other colleges around the nation and passionately shared their vision. Communicating primarily through Facebook Messenger, email, and Google Drive they were able to create a movement that will hopefully spark further conversation on AAPI related issues, topics, and achievements. It's time for our nation of AAPI's to stay spoke.
